Lucy Oram
My work’s core inspiration is human interaction with technology - specifically that of social media and the consumption of recognised icons. My response to this is a narrative in which a crisis has occurred and what’s left is a remnant of civilisation; consumed but obscured by ritual behaviours and worship tradition, idolising a ‘social network’ whose purpose of connectivity has been made obsolete.
To reflect the obsolescence I have used a range of mediums, repurposing the material qualities of my tools: paint becomes an exploration of colour and perception, drawing tools such as masking tape adopt a decorative element. The unconventional use of foam board allow the flat surface of a painting leap off a canvas and into the realm of tangible space to create an interactive environment; a painting you can walk into.
The observer may explore and re-discover elements that they will recognise from the world created on their smartphone, with icons they know, acting as their own personal signifiers as to the meaning behind my work; a parallel to their own imagined world. This image might reflect contemporary existence, in its apparent meaninglessness and its richness.
