Charlotte Nicholson

In my artwork I challenge ideas of the male gaze, voyeurism and how women have been perceived as consumable objects.  It is important to me that as a society and a race, we should strive towards equality in all things.

I have been tackling the male gaze head on by creating female forms with bite marks.  I hope to show the damage caused to women by the voyeuristic nature of our society.   This has led me to create work reflecting on the Original Sin, and how women have suffered because of this biblical tale.  The human form is often explored in my work.  I achieve this through life drawing, painting and a variety of printing methods.  My main techniques in print include lino cuts and polychromatic prints, but I enjoy experimenting to find other ways to put my message of equality forward.

Research is a large part of my work.  I look at current events and use literature and old texts to comment on the amount of change, or lack thereof, which we have achieved within society.  Without the research, my artwork can be interpreted as pandering to the male gaze; but when combined with my research, the satire is apparent.
