Maria Brayshaw
I am a Kent artist from Hythe, and specialize in ceramics and print.

My work is an exploration of natural organic textures; found, collected and impressed into clay or interpreted using other means to manipulate the clay surface. I am contrasting these surfaces with forms based on inorganic, mechanical objects; again often discarded and found. I have also been exploring with print using photos I have taken of natural forms and turning them into etchings that I have used to experiment with colour.

I have mainly used Raku as my means of firing using shiny metallic glazes contrasted against blackened dry carbonized clay. Making techniques included slabbing, extruding and hand building.

My interest in nature and botanical art has developed during my studies and I have particularly enjoyed experimenting with colour and glaze.

I plan to continue my practices after university during my gap year travelling and gain more knowledge of different ceramic processes throughout the world. When I return I hope to possibly go on to a Masters.
