Lynnette GladDing
My current work is expressed through themes of magical realism inspired by topophilia (the strong sense of place, identifying with a place). I develop and refine my ideas using a collection of techniques, including sketches, photographs, paper collage, collagraph, cyanotype and analogue and digital print before starting a painting. Then I employ a broad range of media and supports, as the layering of surface and meaning is important in my work, although I still have an improvisatory approach to the painting itself as I enjoy the adventure of not knowing what will happen and what the outcome may be.
“Therefore, the places in which we have experienced daydreaming reconstitute themselves in a new daydream, and it is because our memories of former dwelling-places are relived as day-dreams that these dwelling-places of the past remain in us for all time.”
Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space
The dwellings I select to paint are places that I am drawn to for their genii loci and for me they are monuments to human fragility and resilience. Although they are actual places I have visited, they are depicted with the influence of memories of houses from experience, literature, film and television. I believe my work has also been influenced by having studied Drama and Dance at the Arts Educational School, London and then having a professional career in Theatre.
It is my intention to continue studying art at Masters level.
