Heracles Theodoros

My work is about ideas of life after death explored through animation and plaster sculpture.

I looked at the work of many animators but was particularly drawn to Albert Uderzo and Rene Goscinny who created  Asterix The Gaul.  I love historical settings and stories of the Roman Empire. Though I am a stickler for historical accuracy (instead of the spear I give the Legionnaires the sword) I also like to play around with humour. The hand-drawn animation is time-consuming but I love it.

My central piece is ‘The Judgement of Cleopatra’s Heart’.

This work links ideas about the heart taking on different concepts over time: life and death.

The viewer sees the fall of Egypt, sees Cleopatra and her heart judged; avoiding the fate of Am-mut the devourer. Here I play with overlapping genres: historical and magical realism. This precious heart slips through time to Rome and is forgotten. In the Roman operating theatre there is no heart for the transplant patient. BUT what’s the problem there’s a well preserved heart in the jar on the shelf! The patient awakes with the illustrious beating heart.
