Gemma Dyer

I spend a great deal of time looking at the rural environment with a particular interest in woodlands.  I am mainly looking at trees as inspiration for my work. I am interested in growth as a phenomenon and also the particular formation and patterns of individual trees.  This is underpinned by my concern with family and relationships.  I am trying to capture something of the presence I feel when walking amongst trees; it gives me a sense of home.

As well as consideration for the forms I have wanted to create a sense of  unity on the surface and form.  I have found and processed wood from particular trees, dug local clays and used these materials to formulate my glazes. This has been key to my ideas.  The wood has been sourced locally from fallen or damaged trees.  I like to think that I’m giving them a second life.

In the future I’m hoping to continue my art practice by building a studio at home and working part-time.  I hope to consider further study in the future.
