Dannielle Robertson
I am a practicing artist, specialising in painting. Although I mainly use acrylic, I have explored with watercolour and lino prints. I use acrylic paint in thin layers and build up onto it to create texture and tones, I use cotton duck as a support which is most appropriate for the style of painting and for large-scale works. I use cheap materials to directly convey the message: my work is not to make ‘beautiful’ things, so it does not matter to me that the materials are cheap.

My work focuses on contemporary political and social issues, for example looking at the recent US election and Brexit, and it conveys my anger at the state that the world is in. My work responds to a strong belief system engrained within myself, and a strong feeling of having to do something, rather than remain passive. Growing up in Scotland, artists that I admired and was heavily influenced by are still artists today that I look upon for inspiration and leave me in awe. My paintings are made to be part of a conversation. I want to stir up some emotion or reaction, and I don’t care whether you like it or not. In the future, I will make work in the same way as it is the best way to talk about things that I care deeply about and if I can change a tiny part of the world with my art, then I will.
